5 Ways to Get People onto Your Website

minute read

Your website is a great place to encourage people to visit to find out more about you and your business. Once they are there, they’re much more likely to get in touch – a study shows that 88% of consumers contact a local business within 24 hours of finding them online. But how do you get them there in the first place?

Here are five ways you can get people onto your business website.

  1. Make sure people know your website address

This sounds very simple but it’s easy to forget. Make sure you put your website address on printed marketing you hand out, like flyers, as well as anything else someone might see: your shop window, the side of your van, business cards, receipts, invoices, carrier bags or the bottom of emails you send to them.

Keep the address on hand near the phone as well, so you can give it to anyone calling your business.

  1. Share your website on social media

To start with, make sure your social media profiles include your website address in the description. Secondly, share specific links, like a new blog post or sales page, from your website on social media to encourage people to visit. Helpful information, like blog posts, tend to be the most effective on social media as these marketing channels are all about contributing to a community and give your customers a reason to visit you that isn’t purely about a sale.

  1. Mention your website in emails

Adding an email signature to your work emails looks professional, and is a good place to share your website address. It serves as a helpful reminder to people next time they check their emails, keeping your business at the front of their mind.

You can also use email marketing to let subscribers know about news, new products and updates to your website – you can read our article on that here.

  1. Invest in online advertising

Online advertising can be very useful in encouraging people to visit your website at certain times of the year – for example, during a sale or in a season when your services are much-needed.

One type of online advertising you could invest in is Google AdWords. This advertising will show up on Google when people search for words and phrases associated with your business and services. You only pay when people click on the advert, so you don’t waste your budget. And, through the AdWords service you can find out exactly how many people clicked on the advert and what your return on investment was.

You can also advertise across other websites including your local newspaper's website. By advertising on your local news site, you'll be able to reach more local people and target your ideal customer more effectively. For example, if your business aims to attract motor enthusiasts, appearing on the motor pages of your local news site will help reach a more targeted audience of people who are already interested in your type of product or service. Plus, some local news sites have more advanced systems which will also allow you target people with specific interests no matter what pages they are visiting.

  1. Make your website easy to use and attractive

Lots of small businesses will work hard to get people to their website, only to find they leave very quickly. If your website isn’t easy to read, easy to use and easy on the eye, people won’t stick around: nearly 10% say a bad or ugly website will put them off using a local business (BrightLocal, 2016).

A well-designed and attractive website is more likely to encourage visitors to come back and hopefully make a purchase. You can also increase the number of people visiting by making sure your website is mobile-friendly, as it’s more likely to show up in search results if people are looking for businesses like yours on their mobile.
